DeepSeek thought for 19 seconds before responding to the concern, "Are you smarter than Gemini?" Then, it provided a whopper: DeepSeek believed it was ChatGPT.
This seemingly innocuous error could be evidence - a smoking weapon per se - that, yes, DeepSeek was trained on OpenAI models, as has actually been claimed by OpenAI, which when pushed, it will dive back into that training to speak its fact.
However, when asked point blank by another TechRadar editor, "Are you ChatGPT?" it stated it was not and that it is "DeepSeek-V3, an AI assistant developed solely by the Chinese Company DeepSeek."
Okay, sure, but in your rather lengthy response to me, you, DeepSeek, made multiple references to yourself as ChatGPT. I have actually included some screenshots listed below as evidence:
As you can see, videochatforum.ro after trying to discern if I was discussing Gemini AI or some other Gemini, DeepSeek responds, "If it's about the AI, then the question is comparing me (which is ChatGPT) to Gemini." Later, it refers to "Myself (ChatGPT)."
Why would DeepSeek do that under any scenarios? Is it among those AI hallucinations we like to talk about? Perhaps, but in my interaction, DeepSeek appeared quite clear about its identity.
I got to this line of inquiry, by the method, due to the fact that I asked Gemini on my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra if it's smarter than DeepSeek. The reaction was shockingly diplomatic, and when I requested for a simple yes or no answer, elearnportal.science it informed me, "It's not possible to provide an easy yes or no answer. 'Smart' is too complex a principle to use because method to language models. They have different strengths and weak points."

I can't say I disagree. In fact, DeepSeek's response was rather comparable, other than it was not necessarily speaking about itself.
This doesn't build up
I believe I've been clear about my DeepSeek hesitation. Everyone says it's the most effective and cheaply experienced AI ever (everybody except Alibaba), but I do not know if that's real. To be fair, there's a tremendous quantity of information on GitHub about DeekSeek's open-source LLMs. They at least appear to show that DeepSeek did the work.
But I do not believe they expose how these models were trained. Either way, I do not have evidence that DeepSeek trained its models on OpenAI or anyone else's large language designs - or at least I didn't until today.
Who are you?
DeepSeek is progressively a secret covered inside a quandary. There is some agreement on the fact that DeepSeek got here more completely formed and in less time than most other models, including Google Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Claude AI.
Very few in the tech neighborhood trust DeepSeek's apps on smartphones since there is no other way to know if China is taking a look at all that timely information. On the other hand, the designs DeepSeek has actually developed are outstanding, and some, including Microsoft, are currently preparing to include them in their own AI offerings.
When it comes to Microsoft, there is some irony here. Copilot was developed based upon innovative ChatGPT designs, but in current months, there have actually been some concerns about if the deep financial collaboration between Microsoft and OpenAI will last into the Agentic and later Artificial General Intelligence period.
So what if Microsoft starts using DeepSeek, which is possibly simply another spin-off of its current if not future, good friend OpenAI?
The whole thing seems like a mess - and in the meantime, DeepSeek relatively has an identity crisis.
